Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth participation in electoral observation missions has been a growing area of interest in democratic practices, particularly as young people represent a significant portion of the electorate in Nigeria. These observation missions help ensure electoral integrity, transparency, and accountability. Zaria Local Government, located in Kaduna State, is a focal point for this study, as it has witnessed an increase in youth involvement in the electoral process, particularly in monitoring elections. While youth involvement in elections is generally seen as a positive development, the effectiveness of their participation in electoral observation missions remains an underexplored area. This study will examine the role of youth in these missions, focusing on their contributions to electoral transparency and how their participation impacts the quality of elections (Tukur & Ahmed, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing participation of youth in electoral observation missions, there is limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of their involvement in enhancing the credibility of electoral processes. In Zaria Local Government, youth groups have increasingly engaged in monitoring elections, but it remains unclear how their actions influence election outcomes or contribute to the reduction of electoral malpractices. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the role of youth in electoral observation missions, focusing on their contributions to strengthening the electoral process in Zaria (Garba & Yusuf, 2023).

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the role of youth in ensuring electoral integrity and transparency. Understanding how youth participation in electoral observation missions impacts the electoral process will help policymakers and civil society organizations design more effective youth engagement strategies. Furthermore, it will contribute to enhancing the overall quality of elections in Nigeria by highlighting the benefits and challenges of involving youth in these processes.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on youth participation in electoral observation missions within Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State. Limitations include difficulties in assessing the direct impact of youth involvement on election outcomes and potential biases in self-reported data from youth participants.
